Special Assembly Commemorating Commonwealth Day
On Wednesday, May 24, 2017 a special assembly commemorating Commonwealth Day was organized at Meenakshi World School. It was an attempt to help students understand the history of the formation of the Commonwealth Nations and what their current agendas are. Commonwealth Day is the annual celebration of the Commonwealth of Nations, marked by a multi faith service in Westminster Abbey attended by the Queen of Great Britain, who is the head of the Commonwealth and the secretary general of the Commonwealth of Nations alongside dignitaries from the member countries. The theme for Commonwealth Day 2017 is “A Peace Building Commonwealth”. At a time of increasing instability and uncertainty in the world, the Commonwealth family of nations in its rich diversity becomes an ever more-needed source of strength and hope for all its members. ‘A peace-building Commonwealth’ is a natural follow-on from 2016’s theme of ‘An Inclusive Commonwealth’, and reaffirms the Commonwealth Charter principle that ‘international peace and security, sustainable economic growth and development and the rule of law are essential to the progress and prosperity of all’. Students of Meenakshi World School discussed on the various strategies and goals of the Commonwealth Nations and also on how this year’s theme, Peace Building, shall go a long way in establishing the much needed peace and brotherhood in the world.
