Indeed, I am of the strong opinion that students should be made to volunteer for extra work besides their routine studies. This extra work may include any social work like planting of trees and making people aware about pollution hazards , spreading health and hygiene, awareness in society in turn controlling various communicable diseases, educating under privileged children, encouraging them to go to school, specially to girl child, participating in "Swatch Bharat Abhiyan", taking part in marathons, doing small but skill-based jobs, organising cultural/traditional events etc.
Now the most important part comes as to why volunteering for a particular task is important for a child. Taking part in such activities contributes towards the overall personality development of that child. For example, if a child undertakes an initiative for teaching under privileged or let’s presume rather managing a cleanliness drive, he/ She will get a chance to meet more like minded people hence making them more social. He/She will be able to devise new ways to communicate with such people. With the time he/she will be able to judge what all is necessary for conducting such event (for example, permissions required from various authorities, cost involved if any, does undertaking a particular job creates hindrance to others etc). By doing so, they will become more practical and socially aware of their surroundings. Through their volunteer efforts, students often discover hidden talents, find new interests and develop such “soft skills, independent attitude, responsibility, follow directions and get along with others. It allows them the opportunity to work with people from different backgrounds.
Whatever we do in our lives for society, is only a fraction of what we have studied in academics. One should remember that an individual is build by experience, builds by practicality, builds by applying his knowledge. So, my humble request is to all the educators/parents/guardians to contribute their part, that is - providing moral support to these students for undertaking some voluntary work and to make these students successful people - both internally as well as externally.
One should remember - youth is the future of the country and can do many things provided they are given the right direction to channelize their full potential.
