ART- WHAT IS ART? WHAT ARE THE AREAS OF ART?

If we check the meaning of art in the dictionary, it says- “The expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power”. Generally, art means we think it’s probably craft work, painting, sculpture, printmaking, design, ceramics etc.

If we go Subject wise -ART DEFINES TWO KINDS OF AREAS- VISUAL ART AND PERFORMING ART.

Visual art which covers painting, sculpture, design, ceramics, printing and whereas performing art covers dance, music, drama, theatre, film etc. These all matters are concept of art.

Art means everything-from morning to night everything is related with art-tooth brush, toothpaste, soap every product s are related with art- its design, display everything-(product design).

What we wear that is also related with art (Fashion designing). Now we all are aware of animation movies, 3-D paintings, Digital painting-these all are actually Computer art. There is also an art which is much known to us called folk art. Now what is folk art? What it’s described? Folk art -which we can call it’s basically a Tribal art, a popular art, a primitive art, and a traditional art.

As an example in India so many kind of folk art till exist-

  • Gond art (Gondi tribes basically practice this art, originated from Madhya Pradesh),
  • Madhubani art (present day- Bihar),
  • Phad painting (originating in Rajasthan),
  • Warli painting (Originated by the Warli tribes from the Western Ghat of India),
  • Tanjore paintings, and very popular kalamkari which has a great impact in our today’s fashion. This kalamkari art basically originated from Andhra Pradesh.

These all Folk art basically gives us a glimpse of those areas culture, some traditional mythological story also there surrounding area’s picture.

If we go to history art has a great impact as a resource of our history-ancient sculptures, monuments, paintings, seal, coins, manuscripts everything gives us a picture of our ancestor. Art evidence also gives us a glimpse of our chronological changes in fashion, food, environment in everywhere. As an example if we go back to 18th century, that time our fashion and in mid 1950’s when pop art emerged in Britain and late 1950’s in United States that time fashion there is a radical changes we can observe in garments, in ornaments etc. Not only in fashion in advertisement- area there is also had remarkable changes.

Now why we offer art in our school? - Art improves our creativity- when kids do painting they actually memorize their ideas, thus they build up their creative areas and If children have practice thinking creatively, it will come naturally to them now and in their future career. Art also improves Academic Performance. It’s also improves students focusing capability, student collaborative power, their ability to take their own decision (How do I express this feeling through my drawing? How should I play this character? Or how I imagine the character which I need to play? Through drawing, painting and sculpture students improve their visual-spatial skills. And research says all children have their own creativity, own artistic mind and they can create art in their way.

So, that’s why great masters said- “EVERY CHILD IS AN ARTIST. THE PROBLEM IS HOW TO REMAIN AN ARTIST ONCE WE GROW UP"

-Pablo Picasso

And for art in our life- “Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life”

-Pablo Picasso
